Legacy Rescue & Modernisation
Fixing, upgrading, and rebuilding outdated systems. Migration from old frameworks to modern Laravel.
What I call legacy rescue is the process of taking an old or faltering web application and making it secure, fast and maintainable once more through a combination of stabilisation and modernisation. For UK businesses with tired PHP systems or Laravel builds that have seen better days, I will put them on a current, well-supported footing. The aim is to do this without discarding what you have already put into the system.
Does your system show these warning signs?
Problems with legacy code seldom make themselves known in one go; they tend to accumulate in silence until running the system becomes a risk or an expense. If any of the following are familiar, an expert opinion is in order:
You are on an unsupported version of PHP or Laravel with no security patches coming your way.
Performance is poor and pages are slow, particularly as data volumes increase.
The original developer is gone and the code is not well understood by anyone now.
Making straightforward changes is more costly and time consuming than it ought to be.
There have been security scares or the system does not pass vulnerability checks.
Documentation and tests are non-existent.
What kinds of systems do you rescue?
I am happy to take on the projects others would leave alone. This might be an app tied to an end-of-life Laravel version, a site in raw procedural PHP with no framework, or a half-finished job left behind by a freelancer or agency. How much of a tangle the code is in is of little consequence; I prefer to read and understand what is there before I make any recommendations.
What if there is no documentation or tests?
Often there is no documentation or testing in place. That is not an obstacle. I will map out how the application behaves and, if necessary, introduce version control and put automated tests around the critical paths first. They serve as a safety net so I can work with the confidence that nothing has been inadvertently broken. When I am done, the system is not just modern but properly documented for whoever has to maintain it.
How do you migrate a system safely?
Migration has to be done safely. The last thing a business needs is for a system it relies on to be broken, so I avoid high-stakes rewrites in favour of careful, reversible steps. An initial audit tells me where the risks are. From there I can put safeguards in place and address the most pressing reliability and security concerns. Should a full rebuild be called for, I will migrate to modern Laravel in stages to keep things running.
What does a rescue cost?
As for cost, every legacy system presents its own set of circumstances so I will not give you a fixed number at the outset. The audit provides an honest assessment of the code and a clear, itemised quote so you are not faced with an open-ended bill. My project pricing is listed on the packages page if you want to see the range.
What do you get afterwards?
After a rescue you are left with code you own on a version of Laravel that is secure and easy to extend. In some cases I will put together a fresh custom web application if the requirements have outgrown a simple upgrade. Either way, you end up with a stable foundation. Book an audit via the contact page when you are ready to begin.
Frequently asked questions about :service
How much does it cost to rescue a legacy system?
An initial assessment establishes the condition of your application and a sensible first step. Fixes, upgrades and larger modernisation projects are quoted individually against the technical scope; website package prices do not apply.
Can you fix a system built by another developer?
Yes. I regularly take on projects built by someone else, including ones with little or no documentation. I start by reviewing the codebase to understand how it works and where the risks are, then agree a practical plan with you before making any changes.
Do I have to rebuild everything at once?
No. Where it makes sense I modernise in stages, stabilising the most urgent issues first, then improving the rest over time. This spreads the cost, keeps your system running throughout, and avoids the risk of a single large rewrite.
What technology will you migrate my system to?
I mainly migrate legacy systems to modern Laravel, moving away from outdated PHP or unsupported frameworks. Laravel gives you a secure, well-supported foundation with a large community, making your system cheaper to maintain and far easier to extend in future. However, depending on the project other technologies may be a better fit, we can discuss this in the discovery phase.
Do I own the modernised code?
Yes, completely. The code, the database and the hosting accounts are all yours, with no lock-in to me or to any platform. Once the modernisation is done you can host it wherever you like and bring in any developer to carry the work forward.
Where are you based, and do you work remotely?
I am a Watford-based developer covering the whole of Hertfordshire and the wider UK. Legacy work rarely needs me on site, so most rescues run remotely, though I am glad to meet nearby clients in person when it helps.
