Freelance Laravel Developer in Hertfordshire
I'm Paul, a freelance Laravel developer based in Hertfordshire with 20 years' experience. I build and rescue SaaS platforms, web applications and APIs using the TALL stack... Tailwind, Alpine, Livewire and Laravel plus Filament for admin panels. Fixed price or day rate, whichever suits your project.
What is Laravel... in plain English?
You may have been put in the position of needing a Laravel developer without fully understanding what is entailed. In short, Laravel is a mature and widely used framework for PHP web applications. Think of it as an orderly set of pre-fabricated building blocks. It allows developers to put in place the usual requirements, security, databases, logins, payments, with confidence, freeing them to focus on what makes your product distinct instead of coding every detail from the ground up. Its stability and ease of maintenance are why it has the trust of companies around the world.
The stack I build with
I build with the TALL stack. That means I have Laravel at my disposal, Livewire to power dynamic interfaces without the weight of a JavaScript front end, Alpine.js where some interactivity is needed and Tailwind CSS for the styling. For internal tools or an admin panel I turn to Filament, it is a quick way to get a secure and polished back office in place. The result is a modern, reactive interface on top of a codebase that is both productive and something any Laravel developer can work with down the line.
New builds and SaaS
The bulk of my time is spent constructing SaaS platforms and business applications: multi-tenant set ups, dashboards, user management, integrations and subscription billing. I make sure the architecture is sound before I start to write code so that the product will scale with your users and you are not looking at a rebuild in a year and a half.
Upgrades, rescues and takeovers
There are many who come to me with a Laravel project in need of attention. Perhaps it is running an old version, was left behind by a former developer or has been hampered by a succession of expedient fixes. I am happy to step in and run the necessary upgrades to PHP and the framework, or to sort out the tangles in the code. If a project has strayed far from best practice I will be candid about whether it can be put right or if a fresh start is called for.
API and integration work
Whether it is REST endpoints for a mobile app, CRM and payment hooks, or third party syncs, I handle the API side of things. Getting two systems to communicate in a dependable manner is what I do.
Maintainable code you won't regret later
Any competent Laravel developer will be judged by the code long after the launch. I put in the effort to write tested, structured work in keeping with the framework’s conventions. Be it an in-house team or someone you bring on in a couple of years, they should be able to pick up where I left off and extend it. You will find sensible database design, good naming and automated tests where they count, and dependencies that are kept up to date.
This is how one avoids the liability of software that has quietly become a problem. I have seen too many cheap builds become an expensive mess and set out to ensure the opposite, a codebase that remains inexpensive to alter as your business does.
How I charge
I like to be clear on costs. With a defined project I will give you a fixed price quote, as you can see in my packages. For more open ended development or to embed with your team, a day rate or monthly retainer tends to be the better arrangement. We will settle on the right model for the job before we begin.

What clients say
“Paul built our entire platform from scratch, including the website, booking system, and online store. His ability to understand what we needed and translate that into a working system was exceptional. We could not have launched without him.”
“The management system Paul built transformed how we operate. What used to take hours of manual tracking is now handled automatically. He understood our complex workflows and built exactly what we needed.”
“The media processing system Paul built handles thousands of images and videos without breaking a sweat. The bulk watermarking and video encoding pipeline he designed has saved us countless hours of manual work.”
Working with a Hertfordshire web developer — FAQs
Do you charge a day rate or a fixed price?
Both, depending on the work. For well-defined projects a fixed price is clearer and lower-risk for you, you know the total before we begin. For exploratory or ongoing work where scope will evolve, a day rate or monthly retainer is fairer to both of us. I'll recommend whichever genuinely fits.
Can you take over an existing Laravel codebase?
Yes. This is a big part of what I do. I audit the existing code, document how it works, and then maintain, upgrade or extend it. If the previous developer has vanished or the project is on an old Laravel version, I can bring it up to date and get you moving again.
Do you do code reviews and audits?
Yes. If you have an in-house developer or another freelancer and want a second opinion, I'll review the codebase for security, performance and maintainability and give you a plain, prioritised report. It's a low-commitment way to find out where you stand.
What Laravel versions and tools do you use?
I build on current Laravel with the TALL stack... Tailwind, Alpine, Livewire and Laravel and Filament for admin panels. I keep projects on supported versions and run upgrades as part of ongoing maintenance so you never end up stranded on unsupported software.
Can you work with my existing team?
Yes. I'm comfortable embedding with an in-house team, picking up tickets, pairing on tricky features or taking ownership of a specific module. A day rate or retainer usually works best for that kind of collaboration.
