Local SEO Checklist for UK Small Business Websites (2026)
A practical checklist to help your small business appear in local search results and Google Maps.
For a UK small business, the way to improve local SEO is straightforward: put yourself in the results customers see first. That means claiming your Google Business Profile, making sure your name, address and phone number are the same in every listing, and adding the right schema. You will also want to target location keywords, pick up some genuine Google reviews and get into the local directories.
If you have a local customer base, there is no more effective method for new business than local SEO. When a user types in “plumber in Manchester” or “web designer near me”, Google puts the local results at the top and those are the ones that get the calls. The numbers back it up, Think with Google reports 76% of smartphone users who do a nearby search will be in a related business within 24 hours.
Claim Your Google Business Profile
Consider this the bedrock of your local SEO. Do not just claim and verify it, fill out every field and keep it current. Put in your full details from opening hours to a good description of what you do. We would recommend uploading some quality photos of the team, your premises and your work.
NAP Consistency
Your Name, Address and Phone number need to be uniform across the board. Whether it is on your site, social media or a directory, the information has to match. Search engines can be tripped up by minor things like using “St” instead of “Street”, which in turn can damage your rankings.
Optimise Your Website for Local Keywords
Work your location into the body copy, H1 heading, meta description and page title. If you can, put together a page for each area you cover. A “Web Design in Leeds” page is going to outperform a generic services page any day when it comes to ranking.
Get Reviews
They are a big part of how Google ranks you locally. Make it simple for satisfied clients to leave a review with a direct link. And make sure to answer them all, negative as well as positive, it shows you are professional and on top of things. The recency and quality of the reviews count for a lot.
Local Directory Listings
Make sure you are listed on Yell, Thomson Local, Yelp and any industry directories that apply. This builds the citations and backlinks you need for a strong local presence, provided your NAP is consistent throughout.
Schema Markup
Implementing LocalBusiness structured data tells search engines exactly what and where you are. In return you can secure rich results in the search listing, with your star rating and contact details on display.
Keep It Going
You cannot do this once and forget about it. To stay on page one and not end up on page three, you need persistence. Update the profile, post some content that is relevant to the locality and watch your rankings. A solid content strategy will support your local SEO efforts over time.
